Chapter Nineteen
PAIGE
It was a warm, sunny afternoon, and I was out running errands with the kids. Brandon needed new shoes for PE; his feet were growing so fast that it seemed like he grew a whole size overnight! Meanwhile, Jenny had been begging to stop by the ice cream shop for almost two weeks, so I figured we could make a day of it. We had just finished up at the shoe store, and I felt pretty accomplished, managing to juggle both their demands without too much fuss.
As we headed down Main Street, Brandon and Jenny were walking a few steps ahead, chattering away about some new video game they were obsessed with. I was half-listening, half-lost in thought, when suddenly, Jenny stopped dead in her tracks.
âMommy! Look!â she exclaimed, pointing excitedly across the street.
I followed her gaze and felt my stomach do a little flip. There, standing in front of the hardware store, was Chet. He was holding a bag of what looked like gardening supplies and chatting with Mr. Parker. He hadnât noticed us yet, but the kids were already making a beeline straight toward him.
âGuys, waitââ I started to say, but it was too late. They were already across the street, calling his name.
âChet! Hey, Chet!â Brandon shouted, waving his arms like he was flagging down a taxi.
I hurried after them, feeling a mix of excitement and mild panic. I hadnât seen Chet since that whole incident at the library, and while I had been replaying our conversations in my head ever since, I wasnât exactly prepared for a casual run-in, especially not with the kids in tow.
Chet turned at the sound of his name, and when he saw us, his face lit up with a smile. âHey, you guys!â he called out, his voice warm and welcoming.
Jenny reached him first, practically bouncing on her toes. âWhat are you buying, Chet? Can we help?â
âJust picking up some supplies for the garden, and of course, you can help!â he said, holding up the bag. âWhat about you?â
âWeâre getting ice cream!â she announced proudly.
Brandon, not to be outdone, chimed in, âYeah, and I got cool new red shoes for PE. Wanna see?â
âSure, letâs take a look,â Chet said, crouching down as Brandon eagerly pulled the box out of the shopping bag.
As I finally caught up to them, slightly out of breath and feeling a little flustered, I managed a smile. âHi, Chet. Didnât expect to run into you today.â
âPaige,â he said, standing up and giving me that easy smile that always made my heart skip a beat. âItâs good to see you.â
Suddenly, without warning, Brandon grabbed Chetâs gardening bag, and Jenny pushed me into Chetâs arms. I gasped and looked up into his handsome face, heart pounding and my breath taken from me again. What in the world were my kids doing? Yet, I couldnât take my eyes off him, soaking in his kind and loving smile. Loving smileâdid I really just think that? I started to blush and looked away.
